5.38 – (As for) the male thief and the female thief: cut off their hands as a penalty for what they have done
This is one of a number of verses that Muslim jurists decided must be the basis of punishments in law, because in their minds these are the limits or boundaries of Allah (ḥudūd Allāh) and therefore the punishment is the “right” of Allah.
