Surah 5

Surah 5:46

"And in their footsteps We followed up with Jesus, son of Mary, confirming what was with him of the Torah, and We gave him the Gospel, containing guidance and light, and confirming what was with him of the Torah, and as guidance and admonition to the ones who guard (themselves)."

5.46 – And in their footsteps We followed up with Jesus
This verse makes a number of affirmative statements about ‘Īsā and the Gospel. First of all, ‘Īsā does ministry in continuity with the Torah, confirming the contents to which verses 43–45 refer. The idea that ‘Īsā “confirms” (muṣaddiq) the Torah (also at 3.50; 61.6; cf. 5.110) raises the interesting question of Jesus’ relationship to the Old Testament. See the discussion of this concept at Q 61.6. For an explanation of the name ‘Īsā, see the comment at 2.87.

5.46 – We gave him the Gospel, containing guidance and light
The Quran consistently describes the Gospel (injīl) in positive and respectful ways. This verse calls the Gospel guidance, light, and an admonition. The following verse seems to tell the “People of the Gospel” to judge according to its criteria.
Here the Quran says that ‘Īsā is given the Gospel (also 57.27). Elsewhere the Quran says the Gospel is “sent down” on ‘Īsā (3.3; cf. 3.65; 5.66; 5.68), and that Allah “teaches” ‘Īsā the Gospel (3.48; 5.110). These expressions raise a question about the Quran’s conception of the Gospel. See the analysis of the Quran’s verses about the Gospel at 57.27.
