Surah 5:54
5.54 – Whoever of you turns back from his religion
This verse uses the verb irtadda (“turn back”), which is the most common verb for apostasy. Here the consequence of apostasy seems to be that Allah will replace those who turn back from their religion with other people who love him.
This verse is also one of a handful of verses that mention the possibility of human love for Allah (also 2.165; 3.31; perhaps 2.177 and 76.8). There is no command in the Quran to love either Allah or other humans.
Both the few expressions about human love for Allah and the absence of any command to love Allah provide a rather stark contrast to the importance of love for God in both the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament. That the famous Shema of the Torah should not find an echo in the Quran is especially curious. Any comparison of the human relationship to God between the Bible and the Quran would certainly need to include this difference.
