Surah 5

Surah 5:60

"Say: ‘Shall I inform you of (something) worse than that? Retribution with God! Whomever God has cursed, and whomever He is angry with – some of whom He made apes, and pigs, and slaves of al-Ṭāghūt – those are in a worse situation and farther astray from the right way.’"

5.60 – Whomever God has cursed, and whomever He is angry with – some of whom He made apes, and pigs, and slaves of al-Ṭāghūt
Who are the people whom Allah has cursed? With whom is Allah angry? This verse is addressed to the People of the Book (v. 59) and refers to people whom Allah “made apes.” A story about Allah transforming disobedient people from among the Children of Israel into apes appears at 2.65 and 7.163–67. Partly for this reason, most Muslim commentators interpreted the phrase in 1.7, “those on whom anger falls,” to mean the Jews.
Readers who would like a taste of Muslim interpretation of 1.7 and 2.65 and many other verses will find these accessible in Mahmoud Ayoub’s The Qur’an and Its Interpreters and J. Cooper’s The Commentary on the Qur’ān.
