Surah 5:66
"Had they observed the Torah and the Gospel, and what was sent down to them from their Lord, they would indeed have eaten from (what was) above them and from (what was) beneath their feet. Some of them are a moderate community, but most of them – evil is what they do."
5.66 – Had they observed the Torah and the Gospel, and what was sent down to them from their Lord
The Quran’s challenge to the People of the Book to observe the Torah and Gospel is well taken (also v. 68). However, if “what was sent down to them from their Lord” means the recitations of the Quran’s messenger (as it seems in vv. 67–68), this is a matter for free discernment and response. Many Jews and Christians will deny the truth of the recitations, and the prophethood of the messenger, by the criteria of the Torah and the Gospel themselves – not least when evaluating the passage of polemic just ahead (vv. 72–77).
