Surah 50:16
A famous verse in this sūra states that Allah is closer to the human “than (his) jugular vein” (v. 16). The verse is treasured by Muslims who make a case for the nearness of Allah. In the context of this sūra, the verse lies between others about a book that records the deeds of unbelievers (v. 4) and about two angels who sit on the right and the left to record every word spoken (vv. 17–18). Therefore, should this famous verse be interpreted as an assurance or as a threat?

50.16 – We are closer to him than (his) jugular vein
This striking verse is especially treasured by Sufi Muslims because it suggests a closer relationship to Allah than orthodox Islam often projects.
Another part of this verse, “We know what his own self (nafs) whispers within him,” is one of just a handful of verses that seems to refer to evil human desires coming from within (cf. 12.53; 75.2; 79.40). See the analysis of the Quran’s teaching on “human nature” at 79.40.
