In the face of resistance from his audience, the messenger warns of a coming Judgment Day. The stories in the center of the sūra, however, focus on Allah’s destruction of various peoples in this present world. In either case, says this sūra, the audience will call the warning messenger “a magician or a man possessed!” (v. 38).

The sūra opens with an oath that the judgment will surely come (v. 6).
