Surah 61:10
61.10 – Shall I direct you to a transaction that will rescue you from a painful punishment?
This verse brings in the language of salvation ( najjā ) to describe a bargain between Allah and the “believers.” The part of the “believers” is to believe in Allah and his messenger and to “struggle ( jāhada ) in the way of Allah” (v. 11). For his part, Allah will forgive their sins and admit them to the “Gardens of Eden” (v. 12). Also, Allah will help the believers to achieve a victory (v. 13).
The expression “struggle in the way of Allah” often appears in battle scenes in the Quran, and other verses in this sūra seem to picture a military situation (e.g., vv. 4, 9, 14). If this is so, the salvation offered in this passage seems to depend on the believer’s participation in the battle.
