Surah 66

Surah 66:12

"And Mary, daughter of ‘Imrān, who guarded her private part: We breathed into it some of Our spirit, and she affirmed the words of her Lord and His Books, and became one of the obedient."

66.12 – We breathed into it some of Our spirit
The way that God made Mary pregnant with ‘Īsā (not named here) is described most explicitly in this verse and 21.91. In 19.17 the Quran says God sent his spirit to Mary in the form of a human being, but the way in which she conceived is not mentioned (similarly with the angels in 3.42–47). This is the final verse about Mary in the canonical progression.
The Gospel accounts are also guarded, and they focus on the Holy Spirit. In Luke, Gabriel says to Mary, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you” (Luke 1:35), while in Matthew the angel tells Joseph something similar (Matthew 1:20). The big difference between the New Testament and the Quran is in the names that the heavenly messengers specify for the child (Matthew 1:21; cf. 1:23; Luke 1:32, 35).
