8.13 – whoever breaks with Allah and His messenger – surely Allah is harsh in retribution
In the midst of the battle scene, the Quran makes a number of theological points. This particular characterization of Allah, that he is “harsh,” or terrible, “in retribution” ( shadīdu ’ l- ‘ iqāb ), appears four times in the sūra (vv. 13, 25, 48, 52).
