8.67 – It is not for a prophet to have captives, until he has subdued (the enemy) on the earth
Instead of the mild “subdued,” a number of translators render the difficult verb athkhana as “made slaughter” (Pickthall, Arberry, Mohsin Khan) or even “inflicted a massacre” (Sahih International). The verb appears again at 47.4.
