Surah 8

Surah 8:67

"It is not for a prophet to have captives, until he has subdued (the enemy) on the earth. You desire (the fleeting) goods of this world, but God desires the Hereafter. God is mighty, wise."

8.67 – It is not for a prophet to have captives, until he has subdued (the enemy) on the earth
Instead of the mild “subdued,” a number of translators render the difficult verb athkhana as “made slaughter” (Pickthall, Arberry, Mohsin Khan) or even “inflicted a massacre” (Sahih International). The verb appears again at 47.4.
Statements that assert certain behaviors of “every prophet” raise the question of the extent to which they correspond to the accounts of prophets in the Bible. See an analysis of this question at 25.20.
