The series of short “when” statements about the Day of Resurrection in the first half of this sūra follows a style of expression not yet seen in the Quran.

81.1–2 – When the sun is shrouded, and when the stars become dim
This sūra opens with a picture of the apocalyptic changes that will appear on the Day of Resurrection, when every person will be called to account (v. 14).
