Surah 9:24
"Say: ‘If your fathers, and your sons, and your brothers, and your wives, and your clan, and wealth you have acquired, and (business) transaction(s) you fear (may) fall off, and dwellings you take pleasure in are dearer to you than God and His messenger, and struggling in His way, then wait until God brings His command. God does not guide the people who are wicked.’"
“Struggling” here translates the Arabic word jihād . This word only appears four times in the Quran, and this verse is its first appearance in the canonical progression. The sense of jihad that the Quran intends in each of these occurrences may be partly determined by context. If the context is a battle scene, and jihad appears close to commands to fight ( qātala , e.g., vv. 12, 14, 29), jihad picks up the sense of fighting.
