Surah 9

Surah 9:38

"You who believe! What is (the matter) with you? When it is said to you, ‘Go forth in the way of God,’ you slump to the earth. Are you pleased with this present life, rather than the Hereafter? Yet what enjoyment (there is) of this present life is only a little (thing) in (comparison to) the Hereafter."

Writers of the earliest Muslim stories of Islamic origins connected this and the following ninety verses with the story of a raid on Tabūk ( Raids , 519–27; cf. Sīra , 602–9). According to Muslim tradition, Muhammad leads an army of Muslims to northwest Arabia to engage the Byzantines in battle. However, when the Muslim army arrives in Tabūk, they find no Byzantine presence there.
