Verse 50

If some good smites you, it distresses them, but if some smiting smites you, they say, ‘We took hold of our affair before (this),’ and they turn away, gloating.

Verse 51

Say: ‘Nothing smites us except what God has prescribed for us. He is our Protector, and in God let the believers put (their) trust.’

Verse 52

Say: ‘Do you wait for anything in our case except for one of the two good (rewards)? But we are waiting in your case for God to smite you with punishment from Him or at our hands. (Just) wait! Surely we shall be waiting with you.’

Verse 53

Say: ‘Contribute willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you. Surely you are a wicked people.’

Verse 54

Nothing prevents their contributions being accepted from them, except that they have not believed in God and in His messenger, and they do not come to the prayer, except in a lazy fashion, and they do not contribute, except unwillingly.

About this Source & Scholarly Authority (Tafsir Ibn Kathir)

Universal Sunni Consensus: Tafsir al-Qur'an al-Azim by Hafiz Ibn Kathir (701–774 AH / 1301–1373 AD) is universally regarded across all major schools of Sunni Islam (traditional, Salafi, Ash'ari) as the most authoritative classical exegesis. It is prized because it relies on Tafsir bil-Ma'thur—interpreting the Quran using the Quran itself, authentic Hadiths of Prophet Muhammad, and recorded statements of the early Companions (Sahabah).

Standard English Edition: This text is from the standard 10-volume English abridgment published by Dar-us-Salam Publications (supervised by Shaykh Safiur-Rahman Al-Mubarakpuri), which is the official, most widely distributed English Quranic commentary in mosques and Islamic libraries worldwide today.
