Surah 94

Surah 94:1

"Did We not expand your heart for you,"

This sūra continues the Quran’s second-person-singular address from the previous sūra. Andrew Rippin claims that while many readers – including non-Muslims – commonly read such direct address as if it refers to Muhammad, “there is nothing absolutely compelling” about interpreting it in this way. The reference in Sūra 93 to an orphan and in Sūra 94 to a “burden,” he suggested, could simply be the typical material of monotheistic preaching. (See Dr. Rippin’s article “Muḥammad in the Qur’ān”.)
