Surah 96

Surah 96:16

"(his) lying, sinful hair."
Claimed Miracle: Neurobiology
APOLOGIST CLAIM

"The Quran refers to a 'lying, sinning forelock' (nasiyah), allegedly predicting the modern neurological discovery that the prefrontal cortex is responsible for lying and decision-making."

Refutation & Exegesis

In classical Arabic idiom, grabbing someone by the 'forelock' (the hair on the front of the head) was a symbol of absolute subjugation and humiliation in battle. Describing the forelock as 'lying and sinning' is a standard literary device (metonymy), transferring the attribute of the lying person onto the very part of them that will be violently seized in punishment. Concluding that 7th-century poetry regarding dragging a man by his hair secretly contains mapping of the prefrontal cortex is a gross anachronism entirely foreign to classical Tafsir.
Pseudo-correlation

Proponents strip a well-known ancient literary device (metonymy) and pseudo-correlate it with modern neuroscience mapping decision-making to the prefrontal cortex, manufacturing a biological claim out of ancient poetry.
