Incarnation (22)
The Lord, the King of Israel, in the Midst of Zion
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Zephaniah)
Rejoice, O daughter of Sion; cry aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem; rejoice and delight yourself with all your heart, O daughter of Jerusalem. The Lord has taken away your iniquities, he has ransomed you from the hand of your enemies: the Lord, the King of Israel, is in the midst of you: you shall not see evil any more.
New Testament Fulfillment
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. Nathanael answered Him, "Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel." took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and [began] to shout, "Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, even the King of Israel."
The prophetic expectation of the Lord Himself dwelling among His people as the 'King of Israel' is fulfilled in the Incarnation and explicitly ascribed to Jesus during His ministry and Triumphal Entry.
The One Who Ascends and Descends from Heaven
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Proverbs)
Who has gone up to heaven, and come down? who has gathered the winds in his bosom? who has wrapped up the waters in a garment? who has dominion of all the ends of the earth? what is his name? or what is the name of his children?
New Testament Fulfillment
"No one has ascended into heaven, but He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man.
Jesus alludes to the rhetorical question of Proverbs 30:4, identifying Himself as the Son of Man who uniquely descended from heaven.
Angels Commanded to Worship the Son
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
Let all that worship graven images be ashamed, who boast of their idols; worship him, all you⌃ his angels.
New Testament Fulfillment
And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, "AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM."
The author of Hebrews cites this verse (or the closely parallel Deuteronomy 32:43 in the LXX) to demonstrate the Son's divine superiority, applying the command for angels to worship God directly to the bringing of the Firstborn into the world.
A Child Born as the Messenger of Great Counsel
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
For a child is born to us, and a son is given to us, whose government is upon his shoulder: and his name is called the Messenger of great counsel: for I will bring peace upon the princes, and health to him. His government shall be great, and of his peace there is no end: [it shall be] upon the throne of David, and [upon] his kingdom, to establish it, and to support [it] with judgment and with righteousness, from henceforth and forever. The seal of the Lord of hosts shall perform this.
New Testament Fulfillment
"He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end."
The LXX uniquely translates the child's title as 'Messenger of great counsel' (Angel of Great Counsel), which the Early Church Fathers heavily cited regarding the pre-existent Son revealing the Father's will. The Angel Gabriel's annunciation clearly echoes the promise of His eternal dominion on David's throne.
The Pre-Incarnate Vision of the Son of Man on the Throne
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Ezekiel)
that was over their head, [there was] as the appearance of a sapphire stone, [and] the likeness of a throne upon it: and upon the likeness of the throne was the likeness as an appearance of a man above.
New Testament Fulfillment
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. These things Isaiah said because he saw His glory, and he spoke of Him.
Early Church Fathers interpreted the vision of the likeness of a man upon the heavenly throne as a Christophany, a typological prophecy of the Divine Word who would take on human flesh.
The Lord Appearing in the Gentle Breeze
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (1 Kings (3 Kingdoms))
And he said, You shall go forth to-morrow, and shall stand before the Lord in the mount; behold, the Lord will pass by. And, behold, a great [and] strong wind rending the mountains, and crushing the rocks before the Lord; [but] the Lord [was] not in the wind; and after the wind an earthquake; [but] the Lord [was] not in the earthquake: and after the earthquake a fire; [but] the Lord [was] not in the fire: and after the fire the voice of a gentle breeze.
New Testament Fulfillment
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. "Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.
Early Church Fathers, such as Irenaeus, interpreted the Lord not appearing in the destructive wind, earthquake, or fire, but rather in the 'voice of a gentle breeze', as a typological prefiguration of the Word's humble and gentle Incarnation, contrasting the terrors of the Old Covenant with the grace of the New.
The Coming of the Messiah
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Habakkuk)
For the vision [is] yet for a time, and it shall shoot forth at the end, and not in vain: though he should wait, wait for him; for he will surely come, and will not wait.
New Testament Fulfillment
FOR YET IN A VERY LITTLE WHILE, HE WHO IS COMING WILL COME, AND WILL NOT DELAY.
The LXX translation of Habakkuk 2:3 personalizes the prophecy by translating 'it' (the vision) as 'he' ('he will surely come'), which the author of Hebrews explicitly applies to the coming Christ.
God Will Appear on Earth and Dwell Among Men
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Baruch)
This is our God, and there shall none other be accounted of in comparison of him He has found out all the way of knowledge, and has given it to Jacob his servant, and to Israel his beloved. Afterward did he show himself upon earth, and conversed with men.
New Testament Fulfillment
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Baruch 3:35-37 was one of the most widely and universally cited texts by the Early Church Fathers (including Irenaeus, Cyprian, Augustine, and John of Damascus) as a definitive prophecy of the Incarnation, describing God Himself appearing on earth and conversing with humanity.
Wisdom Created Before All Things
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Sirach)
Wisdom has been created before all things, and the understanding of prudence from everlasting. He created her, and saw her, and numbered her, and poured her out upon all his works.
New Testament Fulfillment
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
Parallel to Proverbs 8:22, early Church Fathers (such as Athanasius) explicitly cited these verses regarding the personified Wisdom to articulate the eternal generation and incarnation of the Word (Logos).
Wisdom Tabernacling Among Men
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Sirach)
So the Creator of all things gave me a commandment, and he that made me caused my tabernacle to rest, and said, Let your dwelling be in Jacob, and your inheritance in Israel.
New Testament Fulfillment
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Wisdom being commanded to 'let your dwelling be in Jacob' (literally translated as 'pitch your tent' or 'tabernacle') was seen by Patristic writers as prefiguring the Word becoming flesh and tabernacling among humanity.
The Almighty Word Leaps Down from Heaven
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Wisdom of Solomon)
For while all things were in quiet silence, and that night was in the midst of her swift course, Your Almighty word leaped down from heaven out of your royal throne, as a fierce man of war into the midst of a land of destruction,
New Testament Fulfillment
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Early Church Fathers prominently cited this passage in reference to the Incarnation, viewing the Word of judgment descending upon Egypt as a typological prophecy of the Divine Word (Logos) descending into the world to assume flesh.
Wisdom Begotten as the Beginning of His Ways
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Proverbs)
The Lord made me the beginning of his ways for his works. He established me before time [was] in the beginning, before he made the earth: before the mountains were settled, and before all hills, he begets me.
New Testament Fulfillment
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."
Proverbs 8:22-25 in the LXX was a central text in Patristic theology, cited extensively by the Early Church Fathers to defend the pre-existence, eternal generation, and incarnation of the Son of God as the divine Logos.
Begotten Before the Morning Star
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
With you is dominion in the day of your power, in the splendors of your saints: I have begotten you from the womb before the morning.
New Testament Fulfillment
The unique LXX reading 'I have begotten you from the womb before the morning' was universally cited by Early Church Fathers as a direct prophecy of the eternal, pre-incarnate generation of the Son.
Angels Commanded to Worship the Son
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Deuteronomy)
Rejoice, you⌃ heavens, with him, and let all the angels of God worship him; rejoice you⌃ Gentiles, with his people, and let all the sons of God strengthen themselves in him; for he will avenge the blood of his sons, and he will render vengeance, and recompense justice to his enemies, and will reward them that hate him; and the Lord shall purge the land of his people.
New Testament Fulfillment
And when He again brings the firstborn into the world, He says, "AND LET ALL THE ANGELS OF GOD WORSHIP HIM."
Hebrews 1:6 explicitly quotes the Septuagint version of Deuteronomy 32:43, applying the command for the angels to worship directly to the Son (Christ) when He is brought into the world.
The Word Brought Near
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Deuteronomy)
It is not in heaven above, [as if there were one] saying, Who shall go up for us into heaven, and shall take it for us, and we will hear and do it? Neither is it beyond the sea, saying, Who will go over for us to the other side of the sea, and take it for us, and make it audible to us, and we will do it? The word is very near you, in your mouth, and in your heart, and in your hands to do it.
New Testament Fulfillment
But the righteousness based on faith speaks as follows: "DO NOT SAY IN YOUR HEART, 'WHO WILL ASCEND INTO HEAVEN?' (that is, to bring Christ down), or 'WHO WILL DESCEND INTO THE ABYSS?' (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead)." But what does it say? "THE WORD IS NEAR YOU, IN YOUR MOUTH AND IN YOUR HEART "-- that is, the word of faith which we are preaching,
Paul explicitly interprets the concepts of ascending to heaven and descending into the deep as typological of the Incarnation (bringing Christ down) and the Resurrection (bringing Christ up from the dead).
A Light to the Gentiles
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
I the Lord God have called you in righteousness, and will hold your hand, and will strengthen you: and I have given you for the covenant of a race, for a light of the Gentiles:
New Testament Fulfillment
A LIGHT OF REVELATION TO THE GENTILES, And the glory of Your people Israel."
Simeon explicitly references this prophecy during the presentation of Jesus in the temple, identifying Him as the promised light of revelation for the nations.
A Body Prepared for the Son
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
Sacrifice and offering you would not; but a body have you prepared me: whole burnt offering and [sacrifice] for sin you did not require. Then I said, Behold, I come: in the volume of the book it is written concerning me, I desired to do your will, O my God, and your law in the midst of my heart.
New Testament Fulfillment
Therefore, when He comes into the world, He says, "SACRIFICE AND OFFERING YOU HAVE NOT DESIRED, BUT A BODY YOU HAVE PREPARED FOR ME; IN WHOLE BURNT OFFERINGS AND [sacrifices] FOR SIN YOU HAVE TAKEN NO PLEASURE. "THEN I SAID, 'BEHOLD, I HAVE COME (IN THE SCROLL OF THE BOOK IT IS WRITTEN OF ME) TO DO YOUR WILL, O GOD.'"
The Septuagint distinctively translates this as 'a body have you prepared me' (soma de katertisō moi), diverging from the Masoretic reading ('ears you have opened'). The author of Hebrews explicitly relies on this LXX reading to establish the Incarnation as the means of Christ's perfect sacrifice.
The Stone Cut Without Hands and the Eternal Kingdom
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Daniel)
You saw until a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands, and it struck the image upon its feet of iron and earthenware, and utterly reduced them to powder. Then once for all the earthenware, the iron, the brass, the silver, the gold, were ground to powder, and became as chaff from the summer threshing floor; and the violence of the wind carried them away, and no place was found for them: and the stone which had struck the image became a great mountain, and filled all the earth. And in the days of those kings the God of heaven shall set up a kingdom which shall never be destroyed: and his kingdom shall not be left to another people, [but] it shall beat to pieces and grind to powder all [other] kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever. Whereas you saw that a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands, and it beat to pieces the earthenware, the iron, the brass, the silver, the gold; the great God has made known to the king what must happen hereafter: and the dream is true, and the interpretation thereof sure.
New Testament Fulfillment
and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end." But Jesus looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER [stone]'? "Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like dust."
Early Church Fathers, such as Irenaeus and Justin Martyr, universally interpreted the 'stone cut without hands' as a prophecy of Christ's virgin birth (conceived without human seed) and His eternal kingdom which crushes worldly powers.
The Son of God in the Fiery Furnace
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Daniel)
And the king said, But I see four men loose, and walking in the midst of the fire, and there has no harm happened to them; and the appearance of the fourth is like the Son of God.
New Testament Fulfillment
And the Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we saw His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth. teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."
Universally cited by Early Church Fathers (e.g., Irenaeus, Tertullian) as a pre-incarnate appearance (Christophany) of the Word, demonstrating His abiding presence with and deliverance of His persecuted people.
The Begotten Son of God
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
declaring the ordinance of the Lord: the Lord said to me, You are my Son, today have I begotten you.
New Testament Fulfillment
that God has fulfilled this [promise] to our children in that He raised up Jesus, as it is also written in the second Psalm, 'YOU ARE MY SON; TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU.' For to which of the angels did He ever say, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"? And again, "I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME"? So also Christ did not glorify Himself so as to become a high priest, but He who said to Him, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU";
Applied by NT authors to Jesus' resurrection and His eternal superiority as the Son.
The Son of Man Lowered Then Exalted Over All Things
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
What is man, that you are mindful of him? or the son of man, that you visit him? You made him a little less than angels, you have crowned him with glory and honor; and you have set him over the works of your hands: you have put all things under his feet:
New Testament Fulfillment
But one has testified somewhere, saying, "WHAT IS MAN, THAT YOU REMEMBER HIM? OR THE SON OF MAN, THAT YOU ARE CONCERNED ABOUT HIM? "YOU HAVE MADE HIM FOR A LITTLE WHILE LOWER THAN THE ANGELS; YOU HAVE CROWNED HIM WITH GLORY AND HONOR, AND HAVE APPOINTED HIM OVER THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS; YOU HAVE PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET." For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not subject to him. But now we do not yet see all things subjected to him.
For HE HAS PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET. But when He says, "All things are put in subjection," it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him.
The Greater Glory of the Second Temple and the Giver of Peace
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Haggai)
For the glory of this house shall be great, the latter more than the former, says the Lord Almighty: and in this place will I give peace, says the Lord Almighty, even peace of soul for a possession to every one that builds, to raise up this temple.
New Testament Fulfillment
And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law, "Now Lord, You are releasing Your bond-servant to depart in peace, According to Your word; For my eyes have seen Your salvation, Which You have prepared in the presence of all peoples, A LIGHT OF REVELATION TO THE GENTILES, And the glory of Your people Israel." And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated [at their tables]. And He made a scourge of cords, and drove [them] all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
Early Church Fathers universally recognized Christ's physical presence and ministry as the 'greater glory' of the Second Temple, bringing the promised 'peace'. Jesus also identified His own body as the ultimate Temple.
Titles and Attributes (37)
The Servant Known as The Branch
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Zechariah)
Thus says the Lord Almighty; If you will walk in my ways, and take heed to my charges, then shall you judge my house: and if you will diligently keep my court, then will I give you men to walk in the midst of these that stand [here]. and you shall say to him, Thus says the Lord Almighty; Behold the man whose name is The Branch; and he shall spring up from his stem, and build the house of the Lord.
New Testament Fulfillment
Because of the tender mercy of our God, With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us,
The Greek word used for 'Branch' in the LXX is 'Anatole', which translates to 'Dayspring' or 'Sunrise' as applied to Christ's incarnation in Luke 1:78.
The Son as the Eternal Creator
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
In the beginning you, O Lord, did lay the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of your hands. They shall perish, but you remain: and [they all] shall wax old as a garment; and as a vesture shall you fold them, and they shall be changed. But you are the same, and your years shall not fail.
New Testament Fulfillment
And, "YOU, LORD, IN THE BEGINNING LAID THE FOUNDATION OF THE EARTH, AND THE HEAVENS ARE THE WORKS OF YOUR HANDS; THEY WILL PERISH, BUT YOU REMAIN; AND THEY ALL WILL BECOME OLD LIKE A GARMENT, AND LIKE A MANTLE YOU WILL ROLL THEM UP; LIKE A GARMENT THEY WILL ALSO BE CHANGED. BUT YOU ARE THE SAME, AND YOUR YEARS WILL NOT COME TO AN END."

Jesus explicitly appropriates the imagery of Jacob's ladder, identifying Himself as the direct mediator between heaven and earth upon whom the angels ascend and descend.
A Stone of Stumbling and Rock of Offense
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
And if you shall trust in him, he shall be to you for a sanctuary; and you⌃ shall not come against [him] as against a stumbling-stone, neither as against the falling of a rock: but the houses of Jacob are in a snare, and the dwellers in Jerusalem in a pit.
New Testament Fulfillment
just as it is written, "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." and, "A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE"; for they stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this [doom] they were also appointed.
Paul and Peter both explicitly cite this verse, identifying Christ as the prophesied sanctuary who is also a stumbling stone to the disobedient.
The Root of Jesse as the Hope of the Gentiles
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall arise to rule over the Gentiles; in him shall the Gentiles trust, and his rest shall be glorious.
New Testament Fulfillment
Again Isaiah says, "THERE SHALL COME THE ROOT OF JESSE, AND HE WHO ARISES TO RULE OVER THE GENTILES, IN HIM SHALL THE GENTILES HOPE."
Paul directly quotes the LXX translation of this verse to demonstrate that Jesus is the prophesied ruler over the Gentiles in whom they will hope.
Israel Will Seek David Their King
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Hosea)
And afterward shall the children of Israel return, and shall seek the Lord their God, and David their king; and shall be amazed at the Lord and at his goodness in the latter days.
New Testament Fulfillment
"He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end."
Early Church Fathers widely understood 'David their king' as a direct reference to the Messiah, fulfilled in Jesus Christ, the eternal King from the lineage of David.
Wisdom as the Brightness of Everlasting Light
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Wisdom of Solomon)
For she is the brightness of the everlasting light, the unspotted mirror of the power of God, and the image of his goodness.
New Testament Fulfillment
And He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His nature, and upholds all things by the word of His power. When He had made purification of sins, He sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high,
The author of Hebrews applies the exact Greek terminology (apaugasma) from this verse to describe the eternal Son, establishing Wisdom as a Christological type.
The Lord, the Father of My Lord
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Sirach)
I called upon the Lord, the Father of my Lord, that he would not leave me in the days of my trouble, and in the time of the proud, when there was no help.
New Testament Fulfillment
"All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father; nor does anyone know the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son wills to reveal [Him]. 'THE LORD SAID TO MY LORD, "SIT AT MY RIGHT HAND, UNTIL I PUT YOUR ENEMIES BENEATH YOUR FEET "'?
This verse was utilized heavily by Early Church Fathers, such as Cyprian of Carthage and Athanasius, as explicit Old Testament evidence for the distinction of Persons between God the Father and God the Son (the Lord).
The Crown Reserved for the Rightful King
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Ezekiel)
You have taken off the mitre and put on the crown, it shall not have such [another] after it: you have abased that which was high, and exalted that which was low. Injustice, injustice, injustice, will I make it: woe to it: such shall it be until he comes to whom it belongs; and I will deliver [it] to him.
New Testament Fulfillment
"He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end."
The phrase 'until he comes to whom it belongs' parallels the Shiloh prophecy in Genesis 49:10. It anticipates the removal of the earthly Davidic crown until the arrival of the Messiah, which is fulfilled when Gabriel announces that Jesus will receive the eternal throne of His father David.
The Title 'Son of Man'
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Ezekiel)
This was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And I saw and fell upon my face, and heard the voice of one speaking: and he said to me, Son of man, stand upon your feet, and I will speak to you. And he said to me, Son of Man, I send you forth to the house of Israel, them that provoke me; who have provoked me, they and their fathers to this day.
New Testament Fulfillment
Jesus said to him, "The foxes have holes and the birds of the air [have] nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head." "But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins "-- He said to the paralytic, "For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost."
Ezekiel is repeatedly addressed as 'Son of man,' establishing a typological framework for the representative human prophet. Jesus adopts this as His primary self-designation.

Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (1 Samuel (1 Kingdoms))
And the Lord said to Samuel, How long do you mourn for Saul, whereas I have rejected him from reigning over Israel? And he sent and fetched him: and he was ruddy, with beauty of eyes, and very goodly to behold. And the Lord said to Samuel, Arise, and anoint David, for he is good. And Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward: and Samuel arose, and departed to Armathaim.
New Testament Fulfillment
After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove [and] lighting on Him, "He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; "After He had removed him, He raised up David to be their king, concerning whom He also testified and said, 'I HAVE FOUND DAVID the son of Jesse, A MAN AFTER MY HEART, who will do all My will.' "From the descendants of this man, according to promise, God has brought to Israel a Savior, Jesus,
David's selection from Bethlehem and his physical anointing, where the Spirit of the Lord came upon him, serves as the foundational typological prophecy of the Messiah ('Anointed One'). Early Church Fathers universally recognized this as prefiguring Christ's baptism by the Spirit and His eternal Davidic kingship.

New Testament Fulfillment
"He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end."
The angel Gabriel declares to Mary that Jesus will be given the throne of His father David and will reign as the eternal prince over the house of Jacob.

I came out of the mouth of the most High, and covered the earth as a cloud. He created me from the beginning before the world, and I shall never fail.
New Testament Fulfillment
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love Me, for I proceeded forth and have come from God, for I have not even come on My own initiative, but He sent Me.
Early Church Fathers extensively cited the personified Wisdom of Sirach 24, who 'came out of the mouth of the most High' and was established 'before the world', as a typological revelation of Christ, the eternal Logos.

New Testament Fulfillment
"And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: He who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one will shut, and who shuts and no one opens, says this:
Originally spoken concerning Eliakim, this verse is explicitly applied to Jesus Christ in Revelation as the one holding absolute, unchallengeable authority over God's kingdom.
The Precious Cornerstone in Zion
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
Therefore thus says the Lord, [even] the Lord, Behold, I lay for the foundations of Sion a costly stone, a choice, a corner-stone, a precious [stone], for its foundations; and he that believes [on him] shall by no means be ashamed.
New Testament Fulfillment
For [this] is contained in Scripture: "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER [stone], AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." just as it is written, "BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE, AND HE WHO BELIEVES IN HIM WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED." Moses as a Type of the Faithful Son over God's House
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Numbers)
My servant Moses [is] not so; he is faithful in all my house.
New Testament Fulfillment
He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was in all His house. Now Moses was faithful in all His house as a servant, for a testimony of those things which were to be spoken later; but Christ [was faithful] as a Son over His house-- whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.
The author of Hebrews cites Numbers 12:7, explicitly stating that Moses' role as a faithful servant in God's house was a typological 'testimony of those things which were to be spoken after' regarding Christ, the Son who is faithful over His own house.
Wisdom Present as Co-Creator
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Proverbs)
When he prepared the heaven, I was present with him; and when he prepared his throne upon the winds: I was by him, suiting [myself to him], I was that wherein he took delight; and daily I rejoiced in his presence continually.
New Testament Fulfillment
He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being. For by Him all things were created, [both] in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities-- all things have been created through Him and for Him. in these last days has spoken to us in His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the world.
The depiction of Wisdom continually present, rejoicing with the Father, and acting as the master craftsman points directly to the Son's role as the Word through whom all things were made.
The Deliverer from Zion
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
And the deliverer shall come for Sion's sake, and shall turn away ungodliness from Jacob.
New Testament Fulfillment
and so all Israel will be saved; just as it is written, "THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION, HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB."
The Exaltation of the Lord's Christ (Messiah)
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (1 Samuel (1 Kingdoms))
The Lord will weaken his adversary; the Lord [is] holy. Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, nor let the mighty man boast in his strength, and let not the rich man boast in his wealth; but let him that boasts boast in this, to understand and know the Lord, and to execute judgment and justice in the midst of the earth. The Lord has gone up to the heavens, and has thundered: he will judge the extremities of the earth, and he gives strength to our kings, and will exalt the horn of his Christ. And she left him there before the Lord,
New Testament Fulfillment
And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of David His servant--
Hannah's song contains the first explicit prophetic mention of the Lord's 'Christ' (Anointed One) in Scripture. Zechariah explicitly echoes this in the NT by declaring God has 'raised up a horn of salvation' in the house of David.
And Mary said: "My soul exalts the Lord, "He has brought down rulers from [their] thrones, And has exalted those who were humble.
Mary's Magnificat directly models the themes and structure of Hannah's song to announce the Incarnation of the Messiah.
The Raising of a Faithful High Priest
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (1 Samuel (1 Kingdoms))
And I will raise up to myself a faithful priest, who shall do all that is in my heart and in my soul; and I will build him a sure house, and he shall walk before my Christ for ever.
New Testament Fulfillment
Therefore, He had to be made like His brethren in all things, so that He might become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to make propitiation for the sins of the people. Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession; He was faithful to Him who appointed Him, as Moses also was in all His house.
While historically finding near-fulfillment in Zadok replacing the corrupt line of Eli, the Early Church and the Epistle to the Hebrews explicitly typologize this as the definitive raising of Jesus Christ, the merciful and faithful High Priest who perfectly fulfills the will of God eternally.
The Son of Peace Who Builds God's House
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (1 Chronicles)
Behold, a son shall be born to you, he shall be a man of rest; and I will give him rest from all his enemies round about: for his name [shall be] Solomon, and I will give peace and quietness to Israel in his days. He shall build a house to my name; and he shall be a son to me, and I will be a father to him; and I will establish the throne of his kingdom in Israel for ever.
New Testament Fulfillment
Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up." But He was speaking of the temple of His body.
Solomon's role as the son of peace who builds the physical temple typologically points to Christ, who is the ultimate Prince of Peace raising up the true temple of His body.
For He has been counted worthy of more glory than Moses, by just so much as the builder of the house has more honor than the house. For every house is built by someone, but the builder of all things is God. but Christ [was faithful] as a Son over His house-- whose house we are, if we hold fast our confidence and the boast of our hope firm until the end.
Hebrews contrasts the earthly builder with Christ, who fulfills the typology perfectly by being the Son who faithfully presides over God's ultimate house, the Church.
The Great I AM
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Exodus)
And God spoke to Moses, saying, I am THE BEING; and he said, Thus shall you⌃ say to the children of Israel, THE BEING has sent me to you.
New Testament Fulfillment
Jesus said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was born, I am."
Jesus identifies Himself with the divine name revealed to Moses in the LXX ('I am THE BEING'), asserting His pre-existence and deity.
The Lion of the Tribe of Judah
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Genesis)
Juda is a lion's whelp: from the tender plant, my son, you are gone up, having couched you lie as a lion, and as a whelp; who shall stir him up?
New Testament Fulfillment
and one of the elders said to me, "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals."
The title 'Lion of the tribe of Juda' is explicitly applied to Jesus Christ as the only one worthy to open the scroll.
The True Bread from Heaven
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
and rained upon them manna to eat, and gave them the bread of heaven.
New Testament Fulfillment
"Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, 'HE GAVE THEM BREAD OUT OF HEAVEN TO EAT.'" Jesus then said to them, "Truly, truly, I say to you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread out of heaven, but it is My Father who gives you the true bread out of heaven. "For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world."
Jesus refers to the giving of heavenly bread in the wilderness as a type pointing to Himself as the true, life-giving bread descending from the Father.
The Firstborn and Exalted King
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
He shall call upon me, [saying], You are my Father, my God, and the helper of my salvation. And I will make him [my] firstborn, higher than the kings of the earth.
New Testament Fulfillment
and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood--
John identifies Jesus as the 'firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth,' mirroring the LXX phrasing here.
He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation.
For to which of the angels did He ever say, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"? And again, "I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME"?
The Deliverer Shall Be Called a Nazarene
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Judges)
for behold, you are with child, and shall bring forth a son; and there shall come no razor upon his head, for the child shall be a Nazarite to God from the womb; and he shall begin to save Israel from the hand of the Phylistines. And he said to me, Behold, you are with child, and shall bring forth a son; and now drink no wine nor strong drink, and eat no unclean thing; for the child shall be holy to God from the womb until the day of his death.
New Testament Fulfillment
and came and lived in a city called Nazareth. [This was] to fulfill what was spoken through the prophets: "He shall be called a Nazarene."
Matthew 2:23 states that the prophets foretold Jesus would be called a 'Nazarene.' Because no single Old Testament prophet makes this exact statement, the Early Church and scholars widely recognize this as a typological fulfillment of the Nazarite (or Nazir) vow of Samson, who was consecrated from the womb to be the savior of Israel.
The Horn of Salvation and Lamp for the Anointed
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
There will I cause to spring up a horn to David: I have prepared a lamp for my anointed.

In the Benedictus, Zechariah directly references this prophetic imagery, declaring that God has raised up a 'horn of salvation' in the house of David.
The Eternal Priesthood of Melchizedek
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
The Lord swore, and will not repent, You are a priest for ever, after the order of Melchisedec.
New Testament Fulfillment
just as He says also in another [passage], "YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK." For it is attested [of Him], "YOU ARE A PRIEST FOREVER ACCORDING TO THE ORDER OF MELCHIZEDEK."
The author of Hebrews uses this to establish Jesus' eternal high priesthood overriding the Levitical order.
Every Knee Shall Bow to the Lord
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
By myself I swear, righteousness shall surely proceed out of my mouth; my words shall not be frustrated; that to me every knee shall bend, and every tongue shall swear by God,
New Testament Fulfillment
For it is written, "AS I LIVE, SAYS THE LORD, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW TO ME, AND EVERY TONGUE SHALL GIVE PRAISE TO GOD."
so that at the name of Jesus EVERY KNEE WILL BOW, of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Paul applies this exclusive oath of Yahweh directly to Jesus Christ, affirming His divine lordship and exaltation.
The Sun of Righteousness Arising with Healing
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Malachi)
But to you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise, and healing [shall be] in his wings: and you⌃ shall go forth, and bound as young calves let loose from bonds.
New Testament Fulfillment
Because of the tender mercy of our God, With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us, Then Jesus again spoke to them, saying, "I am the Light of the world; he who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life."
The early Church universally understood the 'Sun of Righteousness' as a direct prophetic title for Christ, the light of the world, whose advent is the 'sunrise from on high' spoken of by Zechariah.
The Divine King's Eternal Throne and Anointing
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
Your throne, O God, is for ever and ever: the sceptre of your kingdom is a sceptre of righteousness. You have loved righteousness, and hated iniquity: therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your fellows.
New Testament Fulfillment
But of the Son [He says], "YOUR THRONE, O GOD, IS FOREVER AND EVER, AND THE RIGHTEOUS SCEPTER IS THE SCEPTER OF HIS KINGDOM. "YOU HAVE LOVED RIGHTEOUSNESS AND HATED LAWLESSNESS; THEREFORE GOD, YOUR GOD, HAS ANOINTED YOU WITH THE OIL OF GLADNESS ABOVE YOUR COMPANIONS."
The explicit address of the Davidic king as 'God' (ho theos) whose throne is eternal is directly applied by the author of Hebrews as proof of the Son's divine superiority over the angels.
The Son of Man Coming on the Clouds
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Daniel)
I saw in the night vision, and, behold, [one] coming with the clouds of heaven as the Son of man, and he came on to the Ancient of days, and was brought near to him. And to him was given the dominion, and the honor, and the kingdom; and all nations, tribes, and languages, shall serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom shall not be destroyed.
New Testament Fulfillment
"And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the SON OF MAN COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF THE SKY with power and great glory. Jesus said to him, "You have said it [yourself]; nevertheless I tell you, hereafter you will see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING ON THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN." And Jesus said, "I am; and you shall see THE SON OF MAN SITTING AT THE RIGHT HAND OF POWER, and COMING WITH THE CLOUDS OF HEAVEN."
Jesus explicitly quotes this prophecy during His trial before the Sanhedrin, adopting 'Son of Man' as His primary title and asserting His divine authority and future return.
The Anointed King Rules the Nations
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
Ask of me, and I will give you the heathen [for] your inheritance, and the ends of the earth [for] your possession. You shall rule them with a rod of iron; you shall dash them in pieces as a potter's vessel.
New Testament Fulfillment
AND HE SHALL RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON, AS THE VESSELS OF THE POTTER ARE BROKEN TO PIECES, as I also have received [authority] from My Father; And she gave birth to a son, a male [child], who is to rule all the nations with a rod of iron; and her child was caught up to God and to His throne. From His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may strike down the nations, and He will rule them with a rod of iron; and He treads the wine press of the fierce wrath of God, the Almighty.
God Will Shake the Heavens and the Earth
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Haggai)
For thus says the Lord Almighty; Yet once I will shake the heaven, and the earth, and the sea, and the dry [land];
New Testament Fulfillment
And His voice shook the earth then, but now He has promised, saying, "YET ONCE MORE I WILL SHAKE NOT ONLY THE EARTH, BUT ALSO THE HEAVEN." This [expression], "Yet once more," denotes the removing of those things which can be shaken, as of created things, so that those things which cannot be shaken may remain.
The author of Hebrews explicitly quotes Haggai to describe the establishment of Christ's unshakable kingdom and the inauguration of the New Covenant.
Ministry (42)
The Meek King Riding on a Donkey
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Zechariah)
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Sion; proclaim [it] aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem; behold, the King is coming to you, just, and a Saviour; he is meek and riding on an ass, and a young foal.
New Testament Fulfillment
"SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION, 'BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU, GENTLE, AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY, EVEN ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A BEAST OF BURDEN.'" "FEAR NOT, DAUGHTER OF ZION; BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING, SEATED ON A DONKEY'S COLT."
Familial Division Caused by the Messiah's Coming
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Micah)
For the son dishonors his father, the daughter will rise up against her mother, the daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law: those in his house [shall be] all a man's enemies.
New Testament Fulfillment
"For I came to SET A MAN AGAINST HIS FATHER, AND A DAUGHTER AGAINST HER MOTHER, AND A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW; and A MAN'S ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD.
Jesus directly applies this prophetic description of societal and familial breakdown to the eschatological division caused by His own earthly ministry and the cost of discipleship.
"They will be divided, father against son and son against father, mother against daughter and daughter against mother, mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law."
Zeal for God's House and Bearing Reproaches
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
For the zeal of your house has eaten me up; and the reproaches of them that reproached you are fallen upon me.
New Testament Fulfillment
His disciples remembered that it was written, "ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME."
For even Christ did not please Himself; but as it is written, "THE REPROACHES OF THOSE WHO REPROACHED YOU FELL ON ME."
Paul applies the second half of the verse to Christ's self-sacrificial nature and his bearing of reproaches meant for God.
Isaiah's Vision of the Lord's Glory and the People's Unbelief
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
And it came to pass in the year in which king Ozias died, [that] I saw the Lord sitting on a high and exalted throne, and the house was full of his glory. You⌃ shall hear indeed, but you⌃ shall not understand; and you⌃ shall see indeed, but you⌃ shall not perceive. For the heart of this people has become gross, and their ears are dull of hearing, and their eyes have they closed; lest they should see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their heart, and be converted, and I should heal them.
New Testament Fulfillment
"HE HAS BLINDED THEIR EYES AND HE HARDENED THEIR HEART, SO THAT THEY WOULD NOT SEE WITH THEIR EYES AND PERCEIVE WITH THEIR HEART, AND BE CONVERTED AND I HEAL THEM." These things Isaiah said because he saw His glory, and he spoke of Him. "In their case the prophecy of Isaiah is being fulfilled, which says, 'YOU WILL KEEP ON HEARING, BUT WILL NOT UNDERSTAND; YOU WILL KEEP ON SEEING, BUT WILL NOT PERCEIVE; FOR THE HEART OF THIS PEOPLE HAS BECOME DULL, WITH THEIR EARS THEY SCARCELY HEAR, AND THEY HAVE CLOSED THEIR EYES, OTHERWISE THEY WOULD SEE WITH THEIR EYES, HEAR WITH THEIR EARS, AND UNDERSTAND WITH THEIR HEART AND RETURN, AND I WOULD HEAL THEM.'
John explicitly states that Isaiah saw Jesus' glory when he beheld the Lord of Hosts on the throne. Jesus also directly quotes the prophecy regarding the people's hardened hearts to explain His use of parables.
A Great Light in Galilee of the Gentiles
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
Drink this first. Act quickly, O land of Zabulon, land of Nephthalim, and the rest [inhabiting] the sea-coast, and [the land] beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles. O people walking in darkness, behold a great light: you⌃ that dwell in the region [and] shadow of death, a light shall shine upon you.
New Testament Fulfillment
"THE LAND OF ZEBULUN AND THE LAND OF NAPHTALI, BY THE WAY OF THE SEA, BEYOND THE JORDAN, GALILEE OF THE GENTILES-- "THE PEOPLE WHO WERE SITTING IN DARKNESS SAW A GREAT LIGHT, AND THOSE WHO WERE SITTING IN THE LAND AND SHADOW OF DEATH, UPON THEM A LIGHT DAWNED."
Matthew quotes this prophecy to explain Jesus beginning His public ministry in Capernaum, located in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali.
Elijah the Forerunner Turning Hearts
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Sirach)
Who was ordained for reproofs in their times, to pacify the wrath of the Lord's judgment, before it brake forth into fury, and to turn the heart of the father to the son, and to restore the tribes of Jacob.
New Testament Fulfillment
And He answered and said, "Elijah is coming and will restore all things; but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." "It is he who will go [as a forerunner] before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, TO TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
The Gospel of Luke applies this specific prophetic expectation of turning the hearts of the fathers to the children directly to John the Baptist, who prepared the way for the Messiah in the spirit and power of Elijah.
The Tender Branch Planted on a High Mountain
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Ezekiel)
For thus says the Lord; I will even take of the choice [branches] of the cedar from the top [thereof], I will crop off their hearts, and I will plant it on a high mountain: and I will hang it on a lofty mountain of Israel: yes, I will plant it, and it shall put forth shoots, and shall bear fruit, and it shall be a great cedar: and every bird shall rest beneath it, even every fowl shall rest under its shadow: its branches shall be restored.
New Testament Fulfillment
He presented another parable to them, saying, "The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and sowed in his field; and this is smaller than all [other] seeds, but when it is full grown, it is larger than the garden plants and becomes a tree, so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR come and NEST IN ITS BRANCHES." "[It is] like a mustard seed, which, when sown upon the soil, though it is smaller than all the seeds that are upon the soil, yet when it is sown, it grows up and becomes larger than all the garden plants and forms large branches; so that THE BIRDS OF THE AIR can NEST UNDER ITS SHADE."
Jesus deliberately draws upon this prophetic imagery in the Parable of the Mustard Seed, describing the Messianic Kingdom as a small shoot that becomes a great tree where the birds of the air (the Gentile nations) find shelter.
The Promise of a New Heart and Spirit
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Ezekiel)
And I will give them another heart, and will put a new spirit within them; and will extract the heart of stone from their flesh, and give them a heart of flesh: that they may walk in my commandments, and keep my ordinances, and do them: and they shall be to me a people, and I will be to them a God.
New Testament Fulfillment
Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. "FOR THIS IS THE COVENANT THAT I WILL MAKE WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AFTER THOSE DAYS, SAYS THE LORD: I WILL PUT MY LAWS INTO THEIR MINDS, AND I WILL WRITE THEM ON THEIR HEARTS. AND I WILL BE THEIR GOD, AND THEY SHALL BE MY PEOPLE.
A direct prophecy of the New Covenant inaugurated by the Messiah, where God replaces the heart of stone with a heart of flesh, fulfilled through Christ's redemptive work and the giving of the Spirit.
Walking on the Sea as on Firm Ground
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Job)
Who alone has stretched out the heavens, and walks on the sea as on firm ground.
New Testament Fulfillment
And in the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea. Seeing them straining at the oars, for the wind was against them, at about the fourth watch of the night He came to them, walking on the sea; and He intended to pass by them. Then, when they had rowed about three or four miles, they saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened.
Early Church Fathers frequently cited Job 9:8 as a typological prophecy of Christ's earthly ministry, demonstrating His divinity by performing an action explicitly and exclusively attributed to God in the Old Testament.
Elijah Sent to the Gentile Widow in Zarephath
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (1 Kings (3 Kingdoms))
Arise, and go to Sarepta of the Sidonian [land]: behold, I have there commanded a widow-woman to maintain you.
New Testament Fulfillment
"But I say to you in truth, there were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the sky was shut up for three years and six months, when a great famine came over all the land; and yet Elijah was sent to none of them, but only to Zarephath, [in the land] of Sidon, to a woman who was a widow.
Jesus explicitly cites Elijah being sent to the widow of Zarephath in Sidon as a typological justification for His own rejection by Israel and the extension of His Messianic grace and ministry to the Gentiles.
Elijah's Forty-Day Fast in the Wilderness
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (1 Kings (3 Kingdoms))
And he arose, and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that meat forty days and forty nights to mount Choreb.
New Testament Fulfillment
And after He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He then became hungry. for forty days, being tempted by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they had ended, He became hungry.
Elijah's forty-day and forty-night fast in the wilderness while journeying to Mount Horeb was universally understood by the Early Church Fathers as a typological foreshadowing of Christ's forty-day fast in the wilderness prior to His public ministry.
The Preparation of the Way for God's Glory
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Baruch)
For God has appointed that every high hill, and banks of long continuance, should be cast down, and valleys filled up, to make even the ground, that Israel may go safely in the glory of God, For God shall lead Israel with joy in the light of his glory with the mercy and righteousness that comes from him.
New Testament Fulfillment
as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT. 'EVERY RAVINE WILL BE FILLED, AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND HILL WILL BE BROUGHT LOW; THE CROOKED WILL BECOME STRAIGHT, AND THE ROUGH ROADS SMOOTH; AND ALL FLESH WILL SEE THE SALVATION OF GOD.'"
Echoing Isaiah 40:4, Baruch envisions the leveling of mountains and valleys to prepare the way for Israel to walk in the 'glory of God.' The Gospels explicitly cite this prophetic imagery as fulfilled by John the Baptist preparing the way for Jesus.
The One Shepherd, My Servant David
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Ezekiel)
And I will raise up one shepherd over them, and he shall tend them, [even] my servant David, and he shall be their shepherd; and I the Lord will be to them a God, and David a prince in the midst of them; I the Lord have spoken it.
New Testament Fulfillment
"I am the good shepherd; the good shepherd lays down His life for the sheep. "I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock [with] one shepherd.
Jesus explicitly identifies Himself as the Good Shepherd, fulfilling the promise of a single shepherd from the line of David who will personally tend God's flock.
The Bread of Life and Living Water
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Sirach)
They that eat me shall yet be hungry, and they that drink me shall yet be thirsty.
New Testament Fulfillment
but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life." Jesus said to them, "I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me will not hunger, and he who believes in Me will never thirst.
Jesus draws upon the Wisdom motif of eating and drinking in Sirach 24, presenting Himself as the ultimate fulfillment who permanently satisfies spiritual hunger and thirst.
The Messiah Healing the Deaf and Blind
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
And in that day the deaf shall hear the words of the book, and they that are in darkness, and they that are in mist: the eyes of the blind shall see, and the poor shall rejoice with joy because of the Lord, and they that had no hope among men shall be filled with joy.
New Testament Fulfillment
Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you hear and see: [the] BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT and [the] lame walk, [the] lepers are cleansed and [the] deaf hear, [the] dead are raised up, and [the] POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM. And He answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you have seen and heard: [the] BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT, [the] lame walk, [the] lepers are cleansed, and [the] deaf hear, [the] dead are raised up, [the] POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM.
Jesus directly alludes to this prophecy to prove to John the Baptist's disciples that He is indeed the expected Messiah performing the prophesied signs.
The Bread from Heaven
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Wisdom of Solomon)
Instead whereof you fed your own people with angels' food, and did send them from heaven bread prepared without their labor, able to content every man's delight, and agreeing to every taste. That your children, O Lord, whom you love, might know, that it is not the growing of fruits that nourishes man: but that it is your word, which preserves them that put their trust in you.
"For the bread of God is that which comes down out of heaven, and gives life to the world." "I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh."
The 'angels' food' and 'bread from heaven' are used typologically by Christ to declare Himself as the true Bread of Life sustained by the Word of God.
The Preaching to the Gentiles and Their Repentance
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Jonah)
And Jonas began to enter into the city about a day's journey, and he proclaimed, and said, Yet three days, and Nineve shall be overthrown. And the men of Nineve believed God, and proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloths, from the greatest of them to the least of them.
New Testament Fulfillment
"The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment, and will condemn it because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here. "The men of Nineveh will stand up with this generation at the judgment and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and behold, something greater than Jonah is here.
Christ explicitly parallels His ministry with Jonah's, declaring Himself 'greater than Jonah' and using Nineveh's repentance as a typological foreshadowing of the Gentiles receiving His message.
The Anointed One Preaches Glad Tidings
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me; he has sent me to preach glad tidings to the poor, to heal the broken in heart, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind; to declare the acceptable year of the Lord, and the day of recompence; to comfort all that mourn;
New Testament Fulfillment
"THE SPIRIT OF THE LORD IS UPON ME, BECAUSE HE ANOINTED ME TO PREACH THE GOSPEL TO THE POOR. HE HAS SENT ME TO PROCLAIM RELEASE TO THE CAPTIVES, AND RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND, TO SET FREE THOSE WHO ARE OPPRESSED, TO PROCLAIM THE FAVORABLE YEAR OF THE LORD." And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing."
Jesus reads this exact passage in the synagogue at Nazareth and explicitly declares its fulfillment in Himself.
Proclamation of the Coming Savior to Zion
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
For behold, the Lord has proclaimed to the end of the earth, say you⌃ to the daughter of Sion, Behold, your Saviour has come to you, having his reward and his work before his face.
New Testament Fulfillment
"SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION, 'BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU, GENTLE, AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY, EVEN ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A BEAST OF BURDEN.'"
Matthew combines the opening phrase of Isaiah 62:11 ('Say to the daughter of Sion') with Zechariah 9:9 to describe the Triumphal Entry of Christ.
The New Covenant
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Jeremiah)
Behold, the days come, says the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Juda: not according to the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day when I took hold of their hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; for they abode not in my covenant, and I disregarded them, says the Lord. For this is my covenant which I will make with the house of Israel; after those days, says the Lord, I will surely put my laws into their mind, and write them on their hearts; and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people. And they shall not at all teach every one his [fellow] citizen, and every one his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least of them to the greatest of them: for I will be merciful to their iniquities, and their sins I will remember no more.
New Testament Fulfillment
And in the same way [He took] the cup after they had eaten, saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.
For finding fault with them, He says, "BEHOLD, DAYS ARE COMING, SAYS THE LORD, WHEN I WILL EFFECT A NEW COVENANT WITH THE HOUSE OF ISRAEL AND WITH THE HOUSE OF JUDAH; NOT LIKE THE COVENANT WHICH I MADE WITH THEIR FATHERS ON THE DAY WHEN I TOOK THEM BY THE HAND TO LEAD THEM OUT OF THE LAND OF EGYPT; FOR THEY DID NOT CONTINUE IN MY COVENANT, AND I DID NOT CARE FOR THEM, SAYS THE LORD. "AND THEY SHALL NOT TEACH EVERYONE HIS FELLOW CITIZEN, AND EVERYONE HIS BROTHER, SAYING, 'KNOW THE LORD,' FOR ALL WILL KNOW ME, FROM THE LEAST TO THE GREATEST OF THEM. "FOR I WILL BE MERCIFUL TO THEIR INIQUITIES, AND I WILL REMEMBER THEIR SINS NO MORE."
Jesus institutes the New Covenant at the Last Supper, and the author of Hebrews quotes this passage extensively to demonstrate that Christ is the mediator of this new, superior covenant.
Wisdom's House and the Mingled Feast
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Proverbs)
Wisdom has built a house for herself, and set up seven pillars. She has killed her beasts; she has mingled her wine in a bowl, and prepared her table. Come, eat of my bread, and drink wine which I have mingled for you.
New Testament Fulfillment
While they were eating, Jesus took [some] bread, and after a blessing, He broke [it] and gave [it] to the disciples, and said, "Take, eat; this is My body." And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave [it] to them, saying, "Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. "I am the living bread that came down out of heaven; if anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever; and the bread also which I will give for the life of the world is My flesh." "For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink.
Early Church Fathers (such as Augustine and Cyprian) universally interpreted Wisdom building her house as the Word taking on human flesh, and the prepared table with bread and mingled wine as a typological prophecy of the Eucharist.
A Light to the Gentiles
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
And he said to me, [It is] a great thing for you to be called my servant, to establish the tribes of Jacob, and to recover the dispersion of Israel: behold, I have given you for the covenant of a race, for a light of the Gentiles, that you should be for salvation to the end of the earth.
New Testament Fulfillment
A LIGHT OF REVELATION TO THE GENTILES, And the glory of Your people Israel." "For so the Lord has commanded us, 'I HAVE PLACED YOU AS A LIGHT FOR THE GENTILES, THAT YOU MAY BRING SALVATION TO THE END OF THE EARTH.'"
Simeon proclaims this fulfillment when holding the infant Jesus, and Paul later explicitly applies it to the spread of the Gospel to the Gentiles.

New Testament Fulfillment
[This was] to fulfill the word of Isaiah the prophet which he spoke: "LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT? AND TO WHOM HAS THE ARM OF THE LORD BEEN REVEALED?" However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, "LORD, WHO HAS BELIEVED OUR REPORT?"

for it is written, 'HE WILL COMMAND HIS ANGELS CONCERNING YOU TO GUARD YOU,' and, 'ON [their] HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, SO THAT YOU WILL NOT STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE.'"
Quoted during the Temptation in the wilderness, establishing this text as a well-understood type regarding the ultimate divine protection of God's Son.
The Rejected Stone Becomes the Cornerstone
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner. This has been done of the Lord; and it is wonderful in our eyes.
New Testament Fulfillment
Jesus said to them, "Did you never read in the Scriptures, 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER [stone]; THIS CAME ABOUT FROM THE LORD, AND IT IS MARVELOUS IN OUR EYES '? "Have you not even read this Scripture: 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER [stone]; But Jesus looked at them and said, "What then is this that is written: 'THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER [stone]'? "He is the STONE WHICH WAS REJECTED by you, THE BUILDERS, [but] WHICH BECAME THE CHIEF CORNER [stone].
Provoking Israel to Jealousy through the Gentiles
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Deuteronomy)
They have provoked me to jealousy with [that which is] not God, they have exasperated me with their idols; and I will provoke them to jealousy with them that are no nation, I will anger them with a nation void of understanding.
New Testament Fulfillment
But I say, surely Israel did not know, did they? First Moses says, "I WILL MAKE YOU JEALOUS BY THAT WHICH IS NOT A NATION, BY A NATION WITHOUT UNDERSTANDING WILL I ANGER YOU."
Paul cites this verse to explain the Messianic inclusion of the Gentiles, which serves to provoke the unbelieving portion of Israel to jealousy.
Gentiles Rejoicing with His People
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Deuteronomy)
Rejoice, you⌃ heavens, with him, and let all the angels of God worship him; rejoice you⌃ Gentiles, with his people, and let all the sons of God strengthen themselves in him; for he will avenge the blood of his sons, and he will render vengeance, and recompense justice to his enemies, and will reward them that hate him; and the Lord shall purge the land of his people.
New Testament Fulfillment
Again he says, "REJOICE, O GENTILES, WITH HIS PEOPLE."
Paul quotes this verse to demonstrate that Christ became a servant to the Jews in order to fulfill the promises, ultimately leading the Gentiles to rejoice and glorify God for His mercy in the Messianic age.
The Temple Corrupted into a Den of Robbers
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Jeremiah)
Is my house, whereon my name is called, a den of robbers in your eyes? And, behold, I have seen [it], says the Lord.
New Testament Fulfillment
And He said to them, "It is written, 'MY HOUSE SHALL BE CALLED A HOUSE OF PRAYER'; but you are making it a ROBBERS' DEN." But you have made it a ROBBERS' DEN." saying to them, "It is written, 'AND MY HOUSE SHALL BE A HOUSE OF PRAYER,' but you have made it a ROBBERS' DEN."
Jesus explicitly quotes this verse to condemn the commercialization of the temple during His ministry, demonstrating the fulfillment of Jeremiah's prophetic warning regarding the corruption of God's house.
The Prophet Like Moses
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Deuteronomy)
The Lord your God shall raise up to you a prophet of your brethren, like me; him shall you⌃ hear: I will raise up to them a prophet of their brethren, like you; and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them as I shall command him. And whatever man shall not listen to whatever words that prophet shall speak in my name, I will take vengeance on him.
New Testament Fulfillment
Therefore when the people saw the sign which He had performed, they said, "This is truly the Prophet who is to come into the world." [Some] of the people therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, "This certainly is the Prophet."
During Jesus' ministry, the crowds explicitly identified Him as the Prophet foretold by Moses.
"Moses said, 'THE LORD GOD WILL RAISE UP FOR YOU A PROPHET LIKE ME FROM YOUR BRETHREN; TO HIM YOU SHALL GIVE HEED to everything He says to you. 'And it will be that every soul that does not heed that prophet shall be utterly destroyed from among the people.' "This is the Moses who said to the sons of Israel, 'GOD WILL RAISE UP FOR YOU A PROPHET LIKE ME FROM YOUR BRETHREN.'
Peter and Stephen explicitly cite this exact passage from Deuteronomy, definitively identifying Jesus as the prophesied Prophet.
Miracles of the Messiah's Ministry
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
Comfort one another, you⌃ faint-hearted; be strong, fear not; behold, our God renders judgment, and he will render [it]; he will come and save us. Then shall the eyes of the blind be opened, and the ears of the deaf shall hear. Then shall the lame man leap as an hart, and the tongue of the stammerers shall speak plainly; for water has burst forth in the desert, and a channel [of water] in a thirsty land.
New Testament Fulfillment
Jesus answered and said to them, "Go and report to John what you hear and see: [the] BLIND RECEIVE SIGHT and [the] lame walk, [the] lepers are cleansed and [the] deaf hear, [the] dead are raised up, and [the] POOR HAVE THE GOSPEL PREACHED TO THEM.
Jesus specifically points to these miraculous acts (blind seeing, lame walking, deaf hearing) to answer John the Baptist's disciples regarding His identity as the Messiah.

Every valley shall be filled, and every mountain and hill shall be brought low: and all the crooked [ways] shall become straight, and the rough [places] plains. And the glory of the Lord shall appear, and all flesh shall see the salvation of God: for the Lord has spoken [it].
New Testament Fulfillment
For this is the one referred to by Isaiah the prophet when he said, "THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT!'"
THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT.'"
as it is written in the book of the words of Isaiah the prophet, "THE VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE READY THE WAY OF THE LORD, MAKE HIS PATHS STRAIGHT. 'EVERY RAVINE WILL BE FILLED, AND EVERY MOUNTAIN AND HILL WILL BE BROUGHT LOW; THE CROOKED WILL BECOME STRAIGHT, AND THE ROUGH ROADS SMOOTH; AND ALL FLESH WILL SEE THE SALVATION OF GOD.'"
He said, "I am A VOICE OF ONE CRYING IN THE WILDERNESS, 'MAKE STRAIGHT THE WAY OF THE LORD,' as Isaiah the prophet said."
The Gentle Servant of the Lord
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
Jacob is my servant, I will help him: Israel is my chosen, my soul has accepted him; I have put my Spirit upon him; he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. He shall not cry, nor lift up [his voice], nor shall his voice be heard without. A bruised reed shall he not break, and smoking flax shall he not quench; but he shall bring forth judgment to truth. He shall shine out, and shall not be discouraged, until he have set judgment on the earth: and in his name shall the Gentiles trust.
New Testament Fulfillment
[This was] to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: "BEHOLD, MY SERVANT WHOM I HAVE CHOSEN; MY BELOVED IN WHOM MY SOUL is WELL-PLEASED; I WILL PUT MY SPIRIT UPON HIM, AND HE SHALL PROCLAIM JUSTICE TO THE GENTILES. "HE WILL NOT QUARREL, NOR CRY OUT; NOR WILL ANYONE HEAR HIS VOICE IN THE STREETS. "A BATTERED REED HE WILL NOT BREAK OFF, AND A SMOLDERING WICK HE WILL NOT PUT OUT, UNTIL HE LEADS JUSTICE TO VICTORY. "AND IN HIS NAME THE GENTILES WILL HOPE."
The LXX text incorporates 'Jacob' and 'Israel' in verse 1 as interpretive glosses, whereas Matthew's Gospel quotes a version closer to the Hebrew text to apply the Servant identity exclusively and directly to Jesus Christ.
The Messenger of Glad Tidings and Peace
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Nahum)
Behold upon the mountains the feet of him that brings glad tidings, and publishes peace! O Juda, keep your feasts, pay your vows: for they shall no more pass through you to [your] decay.
New Testament Fulfillment
How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, "HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD THINGS!"
Paul applies this prophetic imagery (parallel to Isaiah 52:7) directly to the apostolic preaching of the Gospel of Christ, signaling the arrival of the Messianic era of peace.
Rivers of Living Water Flowing from the Temple
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Ezekiel)
And he brought me to the entrance of the house; and, behold, water issued from under the porch eastward, for the front of the house looked eastward; and the water came down from the right side, from the south to the altar. And he said to me, This is the water that goes forth to Galilee that lies eastward, and it is gone down to Arabia, and has reached as far as to the sea to the outlet of the water: and it shall heal the waters. And it shall come to pass, [that] every animal of living [and] moving creatures, all on which the river shall come, shall live: and there shall be there very many fish; for this water shall go there, and it shall heal [them], and they shall live: everything on which the river shall come shall live.
New Testament Fulfillment
Now on the last day, the great [day] of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink. "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'" But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet [given], because Jesus was not yet glorified.
Jesus identifies Himself as the source of the 'rivers of living water' (the Holy Spirit), invoking the scripture that parallels Ezekiel's vision of life-giving water flowing from the eschatological temple.
Christ Praised Among the Gentiles
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (2 Samuel (2 Kingdoms))
Therefore will I confess to you, O Lord, among the Gentiles, and sing to your name.
New Testament Fulfillment
and for the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy; as it is written, "THEREFORE I WILL GIVE PRAISE TO YOU AMONG THE GENTILES, AND I WILL SING TO YOUR NAME."
The Apostle Paul explicitly cites this verse (which parallels Psalm 17:50 in the LXX) to demonstrate that Christ's saving work brings the Gentiles to glorify God for His mercy.
The Messenger Preparing the Way and the Lord Coming to His Temple
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Malachi)
Behold, I send forth my messenger, and he shall survey the way before me: and the Lord, whom you⌃ seek, shall suddenly come into his temple, even the angel of the covenant, whom you⌃ take pleasure in: behold, he is coming, says the Lord Almighty.
New Testament Fulfillment
"This is the one about whom it is written, 'BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.' As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: "BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY; "This is the one about whom it is written, 'BEHOLD, I SEND MY MESSENGER AHEAD OF YOU, WHO WILL PREPARE YOUR WAY BEFORE YOU.'
Jesus explicitly identifies John the Baptist as the messenger of Malachi 3:1 who prepares the way for His own coming.
And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all those who were buying and selling in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who were selling doves. And when the days for their purification according to the law of Moses were completed, they brought Him up to Jerusalem to present Him to the Lord And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law,
The sudden coming of the Lord to His temple is fulfilled both in Christ's presentation as an infant and His later authoritative cleansing of the temple.
Elijah the Prophet Sent Before the Lord
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Malachi)
And, behold, I will send to you Elias the Thesbite, before the great and glorious day of the Lord comes; who shall turn again the heart of the father to the son, and the heart of a man to his neighbor, lest I come and strike the earth grievously.
New Testament Fulfillment
"And if you are willing to accept [it], John himself is Elijah who was to come. And His disciples asked Him, "Why then do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?" And He answered and said, "Elijah is coming and will restore all things; but I say to you that Elijah already came, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they wished. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at their hands." Then the disciples understood that He had spoken to them about John the Baptist. "It is he who will go [as a forerunner] before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, TO TURN THE HEARTS OF THE FATHERS BACK TO THE CHILDREN, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, so as to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."
The angel Gabriel and Jesus Himself identify John the Baptist as the fulfillment of this promised Elijah, sent in the spirit and power of Elijah to turn the hearts of the people before the Messiah's ministry.
Hated Without a Cause
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
Let not them that are my enemies without a cause rejoice against me; who hate me for nothing, and wink with their eyes.

And the Lord said to me, Drop them into the furnace, and I will see if it is good [metal], as I was proved for their sakes. And I took the thirty pieces of silver, and cast them into the furnace in the house of the Lord.
New Testament Fulfillment
and said, "What are you willing to give me to betray Him to you?" And they weighed out thirty pieces of silver to him. Then that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: "AND THEY TOOK THE THIRTY PIECES OF SILVER, THE PRICE OF THE ONE WHOSE PRICE HAD BEEN SET by the sons of Israel; AND THEY GAVE THEM FOR THE POTTER'S FIELD, AS THE LORD DIRECTED ME."
Matthew explicitly notes the fulfillment of the thirty pieces of silver being cast into the temple and used for the potter's field. The LXX translates the Hebrew word for 'potter' as 'furnace'.
Looking Upon the Pierced One
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Zechariah)
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and compassion: and they shall look upon me, because they have mocked [me], and they shall make lamentation for him, as for a beloved [friend], and they shall grieve intensely, as for a firstborn [son].
New Testament Fulfillment
And again another Scripture says, "THEY SHALL LOOK ON HIM WHOM THEY PIERCED."
While this specific LXX manuscript reads 'because they have mocked', the Gospel of John cites this exact verse translating the underlying Hebrew as 'pierced'.
Striking the Shepherd and Scattering the Sheep

The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you. the one who practices sin is of the devil; for the devil has sinned from the beginning. The Son of God appeared for this purpose, to destroy the works of the devil. Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
Recognized historically as the first messianic prophecy. The Epistles explicitly identify Jesus as the 'seed' born of a woman who destroys the devil's work and crushes Satan, despite the bruising of His heel on the cross.
Hated Without a Cause

They that hate me without a cause are more than the hairs of my head: my enemies that persecute me unrighteously are strengthened: then I restored that which I took not away.

They gave [me] also gall for my food, and made me drink vinegar for my thirst.
New Testament Fulfillment
they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting [it], He was unwilling to drink. Immediately one of them ran, and taking a sponge, he filled it with sour wine and put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink. After this, Jesus, knowing that all things had already been accomplished, to fulfill the Scripture, said, "I am thirsty." A jar full of sour wine was standing there; so they put a sponge full of the sour wine upon [a branch] [of] hyssop and brought it up to His mouth.

Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
Let their habitation be made desolate; and let there be no inhabitant in their tents:

New Testament Fulfillment
The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! and he looked at Jesus as He walked, and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!"
The Early Church Fathers extensively cited the binding of Isaac (Akedah) and Abraham's prophetic statement that God would provide His own sheep as a clear typological prophecy of Jesus, the Lamb of God.
The Anointed Lord Captured
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Lamentations)
RECHS. The breath of our nostrils, [our] anointed Lord, was taken in their destructive snares, of whom we said, In his shadow we shall live among the Gentiles.
New Testament Fulfillment
And Jesus said to him, "Friend, [do] what you have come for." Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him. At that time Jesus said to the crowds, "Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me as [you would] against a robber? Every day I used to sit in the temple teaching and you did not seize Me. When they came to the place called The Skull, there they crucified Him and the criminals, one on the right and the other on the left.
Early Church Fathers, including Justin Martyr and Irenaeus, explicitly cited the 'anointed Lord' (Christos Kuriou) being taken in their snares as a prophecy of the capture and crucifixion of Jesus Christ.
Struck on the Cheek and Reproached
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Lamentations)
JOD. He will give [his] cheek to him that smites him: he will be filled full with reproaches.
New Testament Fulfillment

New Testament Fulfillment
Now when morning came, all the chief priests and the elders of the people conferred together against Jesus to put Him to death; and they bound Him, and led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate the governor.
The LXX uniquely translates this verse as 'Let us bind the just, for he is burdensome to us', which was frequently cited by Early Church Fathers (like Justin Martyr) as a prophetic foreshadowing of the Sanhedrin binding Jesus and delivering Him to Pilate.
The Plot Against the Righteous Son of God
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Wisdom of Solomon)
Therefore let us lie in wait for the righteous; because he is not for our turn, and he is clean contrary to our doings: he upbraids us with our offending the law, and objects to our infamy the transgressings of our education. He professes to have the knowledge of God: and he calls himself the child of the Lord. We are esteemed of him as counterfeits: he abstains from our ways as from filthiness: he pronounces the end of the just to be blessed, and makes his boast that God is his father. For if the just man be the son of God, he will help him, and deliver him from the hand of his enemies. Let us examine him with despitefulness and torture, that we may know his meekness, and prove his patience. Let us condemn him with a shameful death: for by his own saying he shall be respected.
New Testament Fulfillment
In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking [Him] and saying, "He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. "HE TRUSTS IN GOD; LET GOD RESCUE [Him] now, IF HE DELIGHTS IN HIM; for He said, 'I am the Son of God.'"
Wisdom 2:18 is explicitly echoed in the mocking of Jesus by the religious leaders at the cross.
For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God.
The Righteous One's boast that God is His Father aligns with the controversies leading to the passion in John's Gospel.
The Prophet Bears the Iniquity of the People
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Ezekiel)
And you shall lie upon your left side, and lay the iniquities of the house of Israel upon it, according to the number of the hundred and fifty days [during] which you shall lie upon it: and you shall bear their iniquities. For I have appointed you their iniquities for a number of days, for one hundred and ninety days: so you shall bear the iniquities of the house of Israel. And you shall accomplish this, and [then] shall lie on your right side, and shall bear the iniquities of the house of Juda forty days: I have appointed you a day for a year.
New Testament Fulfillment
[This was] to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet: "HE HIMSELF TOOK OUR INFIRMITIES AND CARRIED AWAY OUR DISEASES." and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
Ezekiel typologically prefigures the Messiah by being commanded to physically bear the iniquities of Israel and Judah, foreshadowing the Suffering Servant who bears the sins of the world.
Betrayal by a Familiar Friend
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
But you, O man like minded, my guide, and my acquaintance, who in companionship with me sweetened [our] food: we walked in the house of God in concord.
New Testament Fulfillment
And He answered, "He who dipped his hand with Me in the bowl is the one who will betray Me. While He was still speaking, behold, Judas, one of the twelve, came up accompanied by a large crowd with swords and clubs, [who came] from the chief priests and elders of the people. Now he who was betraying Him gave them a sign, saying, "Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him." Immediately Judas went to Jesus and said, "Hail, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. And Jesus said to him, "Friend, [do] what you have come for." Then they came and laid hands on Jesus and seized Him.
This lament of David is read as explicit typology by the Early Church, pointing to Judas Iscariot who shared fellowship and the Last Supper with Christ before betraying Him.
The Bronze Serpent as a Sign of Salvation
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Wisdom of Solomon)
But they were troubled for a small season, that they might be admonished, having a sign of salvation, to put them in remembrance of the commandment of your law. For he that turned himself toward it was not saved by the thing that he saw, but by you, that are the Saviour of all.
New Testament Fulfillment
"As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.
Wisdom explicitly interprets the bronze serpent event as a 'sign of salvation' saving those who turn to the Saviour of all, which Jesus cites as a typological prophecy of His crucifixion.
The Righteous Sufferer is Mocked and Spat Upon
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Job)
But now I am their music, and they have me for a byword. And they stood aloof and abhorred me, and spared not to spit in my face.
New Testament Fulfillment
Then they spat in His face and beat Him with their fists; and others slapped Him, They spat on Him, and took the reed and [began] to beat Him on the head.
Job's innocent suffering, specifically being made a byword and having mockers spit in his face, was extensively interpreted by Patristic authors (such as Gregory the Great) as a clear typology of Christ's humiliations during the Passion.
Revealed to the Gentiles and Hands Stretched Out
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Isaiah)
I became manifest to them that asked not for me; I was found of them that sought me not: I said, Behold, I am [here], to a nation, who called not on my name. I have stretched forth my hands all day to a disobedient and gainsaying people, to them that walked in a way that was not good, but after their sins.
New Testament Fulfillment
And Isaiah is very bold and says, "I WAS FOUND BY THOSE WHO DID NOT SEEK ME, I BECAME MANIFEST TO THOSE WHO DID NOT ASK FOR ME." But as for Israel He says, "ALL THE DAY LONG I HAVE STRETCHED OUT MY HANDS TO A DISOBEDIENT AND OBSTINATE PEOPLE."
Paul quotes these verses to explain the inclusion of the Gentiles and Israel's rejection. Furthermore, early Church Fathers (such as Justin Martyr) universally cited 'stretched forth my hands' as a typological prophecy of Christ's posture on the cross.

I gave my back to scourges, and my cheeks to blows; and I turned not away my face from the shame of spitting:

New Testament Fulfillment
And while He was being accused by the chief priests and elders, He did not answer. And He did not answer him with regard to even a [single] charge, so the governor was quite amazed. Now the passage of Scripture which he was reading was this: "HE WAS LED AS A SHEEP TO SLAUGHTER; AND AS A LAMB BEFORE ITS SHEARER IS SILENT, SO HE DOES NOT OPEN HIS MOUTH. "IN HUMILIATION HIS JUDGMENT WAS TAKEN AWAY; WHO WILL RELATE HIS GENERATION? FOR HIS LIFE IS REMOVED FROM THE EARTH."
Quoted explicitly by Philip in Acts to the Ethiopian eunuch as referring to Jesus, and mirrored practically in Christ's silence before his accusers.

Then Pilate ordered it to be given [to him]. And Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock; and he rolled a large stone against the entrance of the tomb and went away.

"For I tell you that this which is written must be fulfilled in Me, 'AND HE WAS NUMBERED WITH TRANSGRESSORS'; for that which refers to Me has [its] fulfillment."
Jesus explicitly quotes this verse to his disciples at the Last Supper in Luke, indicating it must be fulfilled in him.

Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
For many dogs have compassed me: the assembly of the wicked doers has beset me round: they pierced my hands and my feet.
New Testament Fulfillment
There they crucified Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in between. "See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, for a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you see that I have." So the other disciples were saying to him, "We have seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "Unless I see in His hands the imprint of the nails, and put my finger into the place of the nails, and put my hand into His side, I will not believe."
This describes the exact method of Roman crucifixion, predicting the piercing of Christ's hands and feet centuries before the practice was invented.

They parted my garments [among] themselves, and cast lots upon my raiment.
New Testament Fulfillment
And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots. But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing." And they cast lots, dividing up His garments among themselves. So they said to one another, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, [to decide] whose it shall be"; [this was] to fulfill the Scripture: "THEY DIVIDED MY OUTER GARMENTS AMONG THEM, AND FOR MY CLOTHING THEY CAST LOTS."
Explicitly cited by the Gospel writers as being fulfilled when the Roman soldiers divided Jesus' clothes and cast lots for His seamless tunic.

Early Church Fathers explicitly connected the binding of the foal to Jesus' Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem.
for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins. But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.
The washing of the robe in the 'blood of the grape' was universally interpreted by the Patristic writers as a direct prophecy of the Eucharist and Christ's blood shed upon the cross.

Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Psalms)
Let his days be few: and let another take his office of overseer.

BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, even the King of Israel."

New Testament Fulfillment
The next day he saw Jesus coming to him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots.
Early Church Fathers, such as Justin Martyr and Tertullian, universally cited 'an innocent lamb led to the slaughter' and the phrase 'let us put wood into his bread' (LXX) as a direct typological prophecy of Jesus's passive suffering and crucifixion, interpreting the 'wood' as the cross and the 'bread' as His body.
Cursed is Everyone Who Hangs on a Tree
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Deuteronomy)
And if there be sin in any one, [and] the judgment of death [be upon him], and he be put to death, and you⌃ hang him on a tree: his body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but you⌃ shall by all means bury it in that day; for every one that is hanged on a tree is cursed of God; and you⌃ shall by no means defile the land which the Lord your God gives you for an inheritance.
New Testament Fulfillment
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us-- for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE "--
Paul explicitly quotes Deuteronomy 21:23 to explain how Christ bore the curse of the law through His crucifixion.
"The God of our fathers raised up Jesus, whom you had put to death by hanging Him on a cross. "We are witnesses of all the things He did both in the land of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They also put Him to death by hanging Him on a cross. and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.
The apostles specifically use the language of Jesus hanging on a 'tree' (xylon in the LXX) rather than a cross, to connect His death directly to this passage.
The Bronze Serpent
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Numbers)
And Moses prayed to the Lord for the people; and the Lord said to Moses, Make you a serpent, and put it on a signal-[staff]; and it shall come to pass that whenever a serpent shall bite a man, every one [so] bitten that looks upon it shall live. And Moses made a serpent of brass, and put it upon a signal-[staff]: and it came to pass that whenever a serpent bit a man, and he looked on the brazen serpent, he lived.
New Testament Fulfillment
"As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up; so that whoever believes will in Him have eternal life.

The Apostle Paul explicitly identifies Christ as 'our Passover lamb' who has been sacrificed.

And you shall know and understand, that from the going forth of the command for the answer and for the building of Jerusalem until Christ the prince [there shall be] seven weeks, and sixty-two weeks; and then [the time] shall return, and the street shall be built, and the wall, and the times shall be exhausted. And after the sixty-two weeks, the anointed one shall be destroyed, and there is no judgment in him: and he shall destroy the city and the sanctuary with the prince that is coming: they shall be cut off with a flood, and to the end of the war which is rapidly completed he shall appoint [the city] to desolations. New Testament Fulfillment
They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: 'AND YOU, BETHLEHEM, LAND OF JUDAH, ARE BY NO MEANS LEAST AMONG THE LEADERS OF JUDAH; FOR OUT OF YOU SHALL COME FORTH A RULER WHO WILL SHEPHERD MY PEOPLE ISRAEL.'"
Matthew explicitly cites this prophecy when the chief priests and scribes are asked where the Christ is to be born. Furthermore, the LXX translation emphasizing 'his goings forth were from the beginning, even from eternity' was a pivotal proof-text for the Early Church Fathers in defending the eternal pre-existence and uncreated nature of the Son of God.
"Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the descendants of David, and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?"

Revealed Between Two Living Creatures
Typological ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Habakkuk)
O Lord, I have heard your report, and was afraid: I considered your works, and was amazed: you shall be known between the two living creatures, you shall be acknowledged when the years draw near; you shall be manifested when the time is come; when my soul is troubled, you will in wrath remember mercy.
New Testament Fulfillment
And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn.
The unique LXX reading 'known between the two living creatures' (ἐν μέσῳ δύο ζώων γνωσθήσ ῃ) was universally cited by Early Church Fathers, such as Origen and Augustine, as a prophecy of Christ's nativity in the manger, often typified by the ox and the ass.
The Lord's Descent into Egypt

Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him." So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. He remained there until the death of Herod. [This was] to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet: "OUT OF EGYPT I CALLED MY SON."
Early Church Fathers explicitly cited this as fulfilled during the Holy Family's flight to Egypt, traditionally associated with the falling of Egyptian idols at Christ's arrival.

"Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? For we saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him."
Balaam's oracle of a 'star rising out of Jacob' was universally understood by early Christians, such as Justin Martyr and Irenaeus, as a direct prophecy fulfilled by the Star of Bethlehem that led the Magi to the newborn Christ.

And I will bless those that bless you, and curse those that curse you, and in you shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed.

The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, [saying], "ALL THE NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED IN YOU." Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, "And to seeds," as [referring] to many, but [rather] to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ.
While Matthew establishes the lineage, Paul explicitly identifies Christ as the singular 'seed' of Abraham through whom the prophetic blessing of the Gentiles is fulfilled.

Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (2 Samuel (2 Kingdoms))

He shall build for me a house to my name, and I will set up his throne even for ever. I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. And when he happens to transgress, then will I chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the sons of men. And his house shall be made sure, and his kingdom for ever before me, and his throne shall be set up for ever.
New Testament Fulfillment
"He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David; and He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and His kingdom will have no end."
The angel Gabriel explicitly applies the promise of an everlasting throne from the Davidic Covenant to Jesus.
For to which of the angels did He ever say, "YOU ARE MY SON, TODAY I HAVE BEGOTTEN YOU"? And again, "I WILL BE A FATHER TO HIM AND HE SHALL BE A SON TO ME"?
The author of Hebrews directly quotes 2 Samuel 7:14 ('I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son') to establish the divine sonship of Jesus.
"And so, because he was a prophet and knew that GOD HAD SWORN TO HIM WITH AN OATH TO SEAT [one] OF HIS DESCENDANTS ON HIS THRONE,
Peter identifies this promise in his Pentecost sermon, declaring that God swore to David that He would raise up the Christ to sit on his throne.

Now the promises were spoken to Abraham and to his seed. He does not say, "And to seeds," as [referring] to many, but [rather] to one, "And to your seed," that is, Christ.
While Matthew establishes the lineage, Paul in Galatians provides the explicit theological explanation that the singular 'seed' of Abraham promised to bless the nations is directly Christ.

After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove [and] lighting on Him, John testified saying, "I have seen the Spirit descending as a dove out of heaven, and He remained upon Him.
The prophecy of the Spirit of God resting upon the shoot of Jesse is visibly fulfilled at Christ's baptism, where the Holy Spirit descends and remains on Him.

And now, O Lord God of Israel, keep for your servant David my father, [the promises] which you have spoken to him, saying, There shall not be taken from you a man sitting before me on the throne of Israel, provided only your children shall take heed to their ways, to walk before me as you have walked before me. then will I establish the throne of your kingdom in Israel for ever, as I spoke to David your father, saying, There shall not fail you a man to rule in Israel.

These verses reiterate the Davidic Covenant, promising that a descendant of David will continually sit on the throne of Israel. While historically applied to Solomon's line conditionally, the New Testament universally identifies Jesus Christ as the ultimate and eternal fulfillment of this Davidic promise.
The Preserved Remnant and Root of David
Direct ProphecyOld Testament Promise (Sirach)
But the Lord will never leave off his mercy, neither shall any of his works perish, neither will he abolish the posterity of his elect, and the seed of him that loves him he will not take away: therefore he gave a remnant to Jacob, and out of him a root to David.

The record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham: "What do you think about the Christ, whose son is He?" They said to Him, "[The son] of David." and one of the elders said to me, "Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals."
The promise that God would not abolish the posterity of his elect but give 'a root to David' points directly to the Messianic continuation of the Davidic line, culminating in Jesus Christ, who is explicitly called the Root of David.

"An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign; and a sign will not be given it, except the sign of Jonah." And He left them and went away. As the crowds were increasing, He began to say, "This generation is a wicked generation; it seeks for a sign, and [yet] no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah. "For just as Jonah became a sign to the Ninevites, so will the Son of Man be to this generation.
